Combed ramie top in natural white. Ramie is a bast fiber taken from the stem of an East Asian nettle-family plant cultivated for thousands of years in China — often called "vegetable silk" for its natural gloss. The staple is exceptionally long and strong, with a cool, dry, linen-like hand and excellent dimensional stability.
Spinners prize ramie for lustrous, hard-wearing yarns; felters and blenders use it to add sheen, strength, and crisp definition to wool. Like other plant fibers it will not felt alone, but it locks beautifully into a wool base.
